turbocharger.co.uk - Site History

After almost 18 months off air, www.turbocharger.co.uk is now back online (January 2008)! turbocharger.co.uk is the first and most original Ford RS and Cosworth web site on the Internet.

The first "RS and Cosworth Appreciation Pages" site was authored using the vi editor in 1994 and was focused on the RS Turbo Series 2 and Cosworth Sierra of the time.

The site went live on the Internet in the summer of 1995, hosted in Basingstoke under the mountcomp.co.uk domain. Bandwidth was provided by INSnet, now part of Cable and Wireless. The site ran on a Sun Sparc 20 running Solaris 2.5.1, with a very early version of Apache http server compiled using gcc.

This was the days before digital cameras, hence all the pictures had to be scanned in from the author personal archives. There were very few HTML editors around hence the site was continued to be developed using the vi under Unix. While at Mountcomp the site was revamped using the new frame technology, wow!

The first www.turbocharger.co.uk site went live in the Spring of 1997 on an AT&T Redditch hosted service. The server at AT&T was again from Sun Microsystems, this time a higher power Sun Ultra-1 running Netscape Enterprise server. AT&T was a tier 1 ISP hence the Redditch data centre had ample bandwidth for the site.

In the September 1998, turbocharger.co.uk was migrated to a solution at Level 3 in London, but remained on a Sun Microsystems server.

Due to the owners work commitments, the site remained very much untouched until it was moved from Level 3 to the Fasthosts solution in January 2008.

We have left the site very much "as is", to replicate the mid-90's look and feel, enjoy that retro feel!

Watch this space, the site will change soon, but this 90's site will be suitably archived for all you original fans out there! There are plans to relaunch the site including the requested addition of cars from The Land of the Rising Sun. Watch this space!
