This image shows a highly modified machine based originally on a MK1 Mexico.
The Escort Mark I Mexico was based on the success of the MK1 Escort RS1600 which used the Cosworth devloped BDA engine.
It was decided at Ford that a new and cheaper Mark I RS needed to be developed without the sophisticated 16 valve BDA engine while still offering good performance. To achieve this Ford used pushrod single-cam eight valve 1600cc Kent engine.
While this car was in planning, Hannu Mikkola took a car with similar specifications to victory in the Marathon World Cup London to Mexico Rally in May 1970. Ford capitalised on this success, introducing the Escort Mexico in the UK in November 1970, where it was an instant success.
It must be noted here that this was the start of a legend as far as rally cars went. The Ford Escort went on to become the car to win and compete in the most rallys in the World. From the early MK1 Escort RS2000 , all the way up to the amazing four wheel drive turbocharged MK5 Escort RS Cosworth This record has yet to be beaten by any other manufacturer or model.
